2022 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Ornament Celebrates 50 Years of the Tree at Crown Center

KANSAS CITY, MO (Oct. 3, 2022) As Crown Center marks its 50th year of hosting the Mayor’s Christmas Tree on the square, Crown Center will once again offer custom-made wooden ornaments to benefit the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund. The proceeds from the sale of the ornament benefit the fund that assists thousands of Kansas City people in need each holiday season.

The 2022 ornament, made from the wood of the 2021 Mayor’s Christmas Tree that stood on Crown Center Square, is called “Celebrating 50 Years.” The laser-cut design features the Mayor’s Christmas Tree in green with some of Crown Center’s iconic holiday decorations in gold, silver, and white.

The wood-cut ornament is proudly designed, produced, and made in Kansas City by Hallmark Cards, Inc. Hallmark artist Sheyda Best designed the 2022 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Ornament.

“Crown Center is proud that the Mayor’s Christmas Tree is part of so many Kansas City families’ holiday traditions,” said Stacey Paine, president of Crown Center Redevelopment Corporation. “It’s wonderful to celebrate this 50 years milestone with the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Ornament, which is such a great example of the spirit of giving within our Kansas City community.”

Since 1973, Crown Center has hosted the Mayor’s Christmas Tree on Crown Center Square as a symbol of the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund. The 100-foot-tall tree – always one of the tallest in the nation – is the centerpiece of holiday celebrations at Crown Center.

“What is lesser known is how the Crown Center team works year-round to make that possible – from selecting the tree, coordinating its transport from Oregon to Kansas City, decorating and lighting it, and then creating ornaments out of the tree after the season,” Paine said.

This year’s Mayor’s Christmas Tree, provided by Cascade Timber Consulting of Sweet Home, Oregon, will arrive in Kansas City on Thursday, Nov. 3, after a 2,000-mile journey through six states.

The 2022 Mayor’s Christmas Tree Ornament will be available starting Friday, Nov. 25, for $16.95, plus tax. Proceeds from the sale of the ornament benefit the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, which assists Kansas City residents in need during the holidays.

History of the Charity

The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund is a charitable association established in 1908 with a mission to provide assistance to the less fortunate in Kansas City during the holiday season. The fund helps several thousand people each holiday season and assists senior citizens, people with disabilities, and underprivileged children throughout the city. You can support the fund by purchasing the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Ornament or by making a donation.

History of the Ornament

Since 1981, Crown Center has been selling commemorative ornaments to raise money for the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund. The first six ornaments (1981 through 1986) were ornaments from the Hallmark ornament line, revised as limited editions with the Mayor’s Christmas Tree inscription. Since 1987, for 36 years, the Mayor’s Christmas Tree ornament has been an original creation, designed by Hallmark artists and creative staff and made from the wood of the previous year’s Mayor’s Christmas Tree.
